THE REPEATING ORDER · SEVEN TIMES SEVEN

The Jubilee

Seven groups of seven years lead to a fiftieth year set apart for liberty, restoration, and return. The count reaches completion; the Jubilee opens a transition.

LEVITICUS 25 · THE OBSERVANCE

Count seven Sabbaths of years.

Israel was commanded to count seven groups of seven years: forty-nine years. Then the trumpet was to sound throughout the land on the tenth day of the seventh month, the Day of Atonement, and the fiftieth year was to be sanctified as the Jubilee. Leviticus 25:8–12

Return to inheritance

The Jubilee restored hereditary agricultural land to its original family. Purchase prices reflected the harvests remaining until that return: the land ultimately belonged to God. The rules for houses in walled cities differed, while Levitical property received special protection.

LEVITICUS 25:13–34

Liberty with defined boundaries

An impoverished Israelite serving another Israelite was to be treated as a hired worker, not as a slave, and released with his children at the Jubilee. The chapter also provides redemption and Jubilee release for an Israelite serving a resident foreigner. It distinguishes these arrangements from its rules concerning foreign bondservants.

LEVITICUS 25:39–55

The land rests

Ordinary sowing and harvesting ceased during the Jubilee. The people depended on God’s provision and ate what the land produced. The seventh-year agricultural Sabbath and the fiftieth-year Jubilee belong to the same pattern of reliance and restoration.

LEVITICUS 25:4–7, 11–12, 18–22

The Jubilee is not an unrestricted cancellation of every kind of debt or servitude. The seventh-year release described in Deuteronomy 15 is related legislation, with its own provisions. Leviticus 25 establishes particular rules for inheritance, redemption, service, and rest. Read Deuteronomy 15.

THE COUNT OUTLASTS HUMAN OBEDIENCE

God continues to count even when men fail to do so.

Leviticus 26 warns that, when the people are removed from their land, it will enjoy the Sabbaths withheld during their occupation. Second Chronicles 36:20–21 connects Judah’s Babylonian captivity with the land receiving its Sabbaths. Their failure did not make God’s command cease to matter: the neglected rest was still reckoned.

“For as long as she lay desolate she kept sabbath…”2 CHRONICLES 36:21 · KJV

These texts directly describe neglected land Sabbaths and the consequences of disobedience. The Wheel of Ages draws a broader interpretive principle from them: God’s appointed count continues despite human failure. They do not independently identify every historical Jubilee or establish an uninterrupted series of fifty-year dates. Read Leviticus 26:34–35, 43; Read 2 Chronicles 36:20–21.

EZEKIEL’S DATE · A WORKING HISTORICAL ANCHOR

The case for a 574 BC Jubilee anchor

574 BC offers a coherent starting point because the Jubilee interpretation of Ezekiel’s date fits an autumn chronology. Ezekiel 40:1 places the vision in the twenty-fifth year of captivity, at the year’s beginning, on the tenth day of the month. Leviticus 25:9 identifies the Jubilee proclamation with the tenth day of the seventh month. Read together, the tenth-day opening provides a reason to examine a Jubilee inauguration rather than an ordinary New Year. Read Ezekiel 40:1; Read Leviticus 25:9.

Rodger C. Young’s published reconstruction uses autumn exile years, inclusive reckoning from Jehoiachin’s captivity, and Jerusalem’s destruction in 587 BC to place the vision in autumn 574 BC. Arakhin 12a preserves a later Jubilee interpretation of this date. Together, the textual reading, chronological fit, and later tradition support using 574 BC as a working anchor for the Wheel of Ages. Young’s chronological argument (2024); Arakhin 12a.

The distinction is important: Ezekiel does not explicitly name a Jubilee, other chronologies date the vision to 573 BC, and Young’s recurrence model uses 49 years. The timeline below tests the Wheel of Ages’ separate 50-year intervals from the proposed 574 BC anchor; accepting the anchor does not by itself establish that interval or an uninterrupted historical count. Human failure to keep the cycles makes their reconstruction difficult, even while the study holds that God continues to count.

The Jubilee proclamation of Jesus

In Luke 4:16–21, Jesus reads Isaiah’s promise of liberty and the acceptable year of the Lord, then declares its fulfillment. The Wheel of Ages understands this as a Jubilee proclamation and proposes autumn AD 27 as its place in the count. Scripture records the proclamation; it does not supply that season or AD date. Twelve 50-year intervals after autumn 574 BC reach autumn AD 27. Forty more reach autumn AD 2027.
